June was a landmark month for WorldSkills Australia, with Global Skills Challenge 2026 bringing competitors, experts, officials, partners and supporters from across Australia and around the world to the picturesque Wollongong coastline for a week of skills excellence.
Hosted across TAFE NSW campuses in the Illawarra, Global Skills Challenge provided an important international competition experience for Australia’s Skillaroos as they continue preparing for the 2026 WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai. For many competitors, the week was a valuable opportunity to test their skills under pressure, work to international standards and experience the intensity of a major global skills event on home soil.
Across four days of competition, workshops were filled with focus, precision and determination. From construction and manufacturing to creative, digital, service and hospitality skills, competitors demonstrated the depth of talent, discipline and professionalism that sits at the heart of vocational education and training. Every completed project, every technical challenge and every moment of progress reflected months – and in many cases years – of preparation.
The week opened with a warm welcome that captured the spirit of the event – including a special koala greeting guests at the Welcome Ceremony – before competitors turned their focus to the workshops, their projects and the days ahead. With media on the ground and special guests, including Hon. Steve Whan MP (Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education in NSW), touring the event, the week also provided an opportunity to recognise the people, partnerships and places that help bring skills excellence to life.
Australia’s Skillaroos represented the nation with pride throughout the week. Competing alongside international peers, they brought focus, resilience and professionalism to each challenge, while continuing to build the experience and confidence required for the world stage. Their results are a credit not only to their own hard work, but also to the experts, trainers, employers, families, educators and supporters who have helped them reach this point.
The week concluded with the Closing Ceremony, where medalists, medallion recipients and Best in Nation winners were recognised in front of their peers, teams and supporters. It was a fitting celebration of the skill, commitment and spirit shown across the competition, and a proud moment for everyone involved in Team Australia’s journey.
