National Competition, Sydney
The 2012 WorldSkills Australia National Competition was held at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park from August 30th to September 1st, 2012. The competition was held over 25,000 square meters of floor space, making it the largest National Competition to date. Approximately 500 competitors, including apprentices, trainees, students and qualified workers, converged at the Showground to compete in 50 skill and trade areas. The skills on show ranged from the traditional trades such as plumbing, bricklaying and hairdressing to the more contemporary professions of web design and fashion technology.
The three day competition, held in conjunction with the National Careers and Employment Expo, welcomed thousands upon thousands of visitors, predominantly school aged children, who were there to not only witness skills excellence in action, but to also explore and learn about myriad of career pathways available to them.
The competition concluded with the WorldSkills Australia Presentation Ceremony, held at Sydney’s, Capitol Theatre. It was there that the 150 category medallists were announced and celebrated. The evening was hosted by Shane Jacobson, Australian icon, actor and writer. Entertainment was provided by the Sydney Region Choir, Australian Institute of Music and the Urban Dance Centre.
