“I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands. While working in my family plastering business, I realised the satisfaction of completing a job to a high standard and completely changing a space.”

You could say Plasterer and Business Owner, Deanna Billerwell has plaster running in her blood. “My father and uncle both worked for the family business created by my grandfather. That was where I began plastering and completed my apprenticeship.”

“Plastering is a massive part of the building trade because we take the house from just the bare bones with all the sticks and timber to ready for paint. It’s beautiful and really rewarding.”

Deanna’s WorldSkills journey started at Regionals where she took out first place, with her then moving to Nationals where she achieved a Certificate of Excellence. “The competition taught me to take pride in my work and that I have great potential to succeed in this industry.”

“I hope that others are inspired by my WorldSkills journey and in particular, young women feel confident to start a career in a trade.”

There’s another rather large reward to her WorldSkills involvement; her training for the competition has inspired her to take a major career step to own her own business. “It’s been a great challenge and I’m really enjoying completing work to my standards and satisfying my clients.”

Deanna has some important goals for her future. “Over the next five years, I hope my business will grow to include employees and a strong reputation of providing trustworthy and high-quality work to the people of Canberra.”

“But I also want to make an impact on the industry, normalising and celebrating women in trade. I hope to not only create an environment that showcases women’s talent, but one where vulnerable people feel safe inviting us into their home.”
