Dylan McIntyre
“I really enjoy landscaping as it’s every trade rolled into one. They throw you in the deep end, but it’s the best way to learn.”
Soon-to-be qualified Landscaper, Dylan McIntyre is the first in his family to pursue a trade. He found out about landscaping through his high-school careers teacher, a discovery that set him on a path he’s never strayed from.
After working for some time and improving his skills, Dylan decided he wanted to further challenge himself. Cue WorldSkills. He entered the competition with teammate, Thomas Downing and together they took out the Bronze Medal at the National Championships.
“It’s been exciting and challenging, both good things. I didn’t realise how full on it was going to be until the first day, but I’ve enjoyed every moment.”
The competition supercharged his skillset in many areas. “I’ve learnt time management and how to complete certain tasks quickly to a high standard. It’s also taught me I can work well under pressure, and that communication is key when trying to achieve the best results. That last one carries over into my personal relationships with family and friends.”
Dylan’s parents have been instrumental in supporting him, as have his lecturers at TAFE NSW and his employer. “I have to say a big thank you to my company. They really look after their employees and invest in all of us, they’ve helped me during WorldSkills by being flexible with time off for training and supplying tools and uniform.”
As for his future, Dylan says, “When the time is right, I would like to start my own business.” But for now, he’s keen to keep upskilling at his current company and slowly work his way up.
