“I’m a third generation Baker. I guess you could say it’s in my blood.”

Even though Connor Beisler’s family have been Bakers for three generations, it wasn’t tradition that first inspired him. “I started my apprenticeship to get out of going to school!”

“But three months into it, I was having a coffee at the front of our shop and a customer pulled me aside, asking if I was a ‘Beisler’. I said ‘yes’ and he told me he’d never eaten a softer loaf of bread in his life than ours. It was at that moment I realised how special our industry is.”

Connor is no stranger to competitions. He recently helped Team Australia beat New Zealand at the ANZ Bake competition, while also winning the Baking Association of Australia’s 2024 Apprentice Baker of the Year. This followed his WorldSkills National Championships Gold Medal.

“When I started entering Bread Baking competitions, I quickly realised how much I loved it. WorldSkills was definitely the pinnacle, the long hours of training and lack of social life are sacrifices well worth it.”

For Connor, WorldSkills confirmed his dedication to his craft. “I learnt how many paths there are for me within the industry. The opportunities are almost endless.”

Support has been a mainstay. “My mentor, Dean Tilden is someone I look up to within the industry. I wouldn’t be half the Baker I am today without his time and dedication to my development.”

“My workplace and family have given me time off for WorldSkills training and mentoring, with access to equipment 24/7, but more than that, they’ve taught me our industry is about sharing good food with people and making their day by serving them their favourite sweets or savouries.”

Connor hopes in the future to travel overseas and learn from Master Bakers. “After travelling, I want to come back to Australia and either run my family’s business or open my own. One day, I’d also like to share my knowledge and teach the next generation of Bakers coming through.”
