“My hospitality journey hasn’t just been about competitions or work – it’s about learning, growing and seeing what I’m capable of.”

Hospitality worker and student Gemma Scott’s passion for hospitality centres on making people feel welcome. “Whether it’s through a perfectly set table or a genuine conversation, I love bringing people together.”

Gemma discovered the hospitality sector by chance after taking on a part-time role as a Food Service Attendant, this led her to study a Certificate III in Hospitality at the William Angliss Institute. “As I got deeper into my course and started getting real experience, I realised I actually had potential to achieve quite a lot.” Keen to challenge herself, Gemma entered WorldSkills and went on to win a Gold Medal in Restaurant Service at the 2025 National Championships.

“The experience has been a big learning curve. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow, boosting my confidence in my skills and future in the industry, but it also taught me I’m stronger than I thought. I can handle pressure and keep improving.”

Balancing training, study, and work proved to be one of Gemma’s biggest challenges, but it has sharpened her time management skills. She’s had invaluable support along the way. “I want to thank my mentor Joanna, my teachers and my family. Their guidance and backing have helped me get here, Joanna is someone I really admire because she’s not only helped me believe in myself, but shown me what’s possible in the industry.”

Gemma is also grateful to her employer for their support in balancing work with preparing for competitions. “It’s made it a lot easier to focus and improve my skills. They’ve encouraged me every step of the way.”

Looking ahead, Gemma has lofty goals. “I want to inspire others to take pride in their skills, while showing them that hard work and dedication really do pay off. I also want to continue to raise hospitality standards, creating experiences that people remember and enjoy.”
