“Promoting skills excellence is so important. It shows the world we’re not only good at what we do here in Australia, but we have amazing training too.”

Apprentice Panel Beater, Jack Richards, has been plying his trade for three years now. He was inspired to pursue it like others in his family before him, taking it more seriously when he realised how good he was at his job, as well as how much he enjoyed the work.

Jack has thoroughly enjoyed his WorldSkills journey so far, but it’s quite easy to pick his proudest moment. “It was when I won the National Championships in Brisbane.”

“Professionally, the competition has taught me I can excel in my career. It’s specifically helped me manage my time and work more efficiently. Personally, it’s given me confidence and belief in my skills and abilities.”

Upon hearing of his 2026 Skillaroos Training Squad selection, Jack says he was equal parts shocked and happy. He credits his employer, Grant Browan, for much of his success. “He encouraged me to enter the competition and has helped me prepare every day. I appreciate his belief in me.”

“I really admire him. He’s taught me how to do panel repairs properly, being clear about the right way to go about it. I can’t thank him enough for not only taking me on as an apprentice but passing on his skills.”

Looking ahead, Jack says he’s keen to “become more efficient” in his trade and hopes to run his own business one day.
