“I’ve been obsessed with programming since Year 8. That early curiosity turned into a drive to build, experiment, and solve real problems through code. I’ve always had a side project on the go, and that hands-on learning is what led me to pursue a career in software development.”

Working towards his Associate Degree in Information Technology, Rajeev Jawaji says his early attempts at programming weren’t all that positive. “I found it overwhelming” but he’s not one to give up and a few years later dabbled in Game Development, which eventually led him into Web Development. “I found it to be so much fun and decided on that as a career path.”

Rajeev says WorldSkills is the first competition he’s ever entered. That makes it all the more impressive that he took out Gold at the 2025 Nationals in his skill, Web Design & Development. “I found it really interesting, plus I got to meet lots of people outside of my skill.”

These encounters led to an unexpected lesson. “Usually when I talk to people about my skillset, I tend to include a lot of technical jargon, but being in an environment filled with people with diverse skills and understanding forced me to be clearer in my communication.”

“I also learnt how to manage my time more efficiently as the competition had many time constraints. It’s something I’m still working to improve to this day.”

When he found out about his 2026 Skillaroos Training Squad selection, Rajeev felt an overwhelming sense of relief. “I’ve had imposter syndrome in the past, but this has helped me get over it.”

While he’s focused on finishing his Degree right now, Rajeev is keeping an eye on the future. “I hope to continue honing my software engineering and web development skills and eventually build something I’m proud of. It would be even better if that project has a sizeable impact in the industry.”
