Thomas Downing
“I was initially attracted to Landscaping as it gave me the chance to work outdoors, but as it turns out, the feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day outweighs that.”
In his fourth year working in the field, apprentice Landscaper, Thomas Downing’s interest in his trade began with a chance opportunity. “When I was in Year 10, my family friend heard I was thinking about pursuing a trade and offered me some work experience. The job was tearing up a steep driveway and then repaving it. When it was finished, I finally understood what it felt like to accomplish something.”
Thomas describes his WorldSkills experience at the 2025 Nationals where he secured a Bronze Medal in conjunction with his teammate, Dylan McIntyre as “very different working conditions than on-site,” and it’s taught him quite a bit.
“I learnt that in the long run, it can be quicker to slow down! I now understand how important it is to take a moment and fully wrap your mind around what must be done, before lifting a finger. Basically, make a plan, then execute it.”
Learning about his 2026 Skillaroos Training Squad selection came as quite the surprise. “When I saw the email, I was on the top of a snowy mountain in New Zealand strapped into a snowboard, I nearly dropped my phone when I read it!”
As for inspiration and support, he looks to both his family and teachers. “My Dad is a prime example that with hard work and determination anything is possible. Justin Roberts, my TAFE NSW teacher, was the one who initially suggested I take part in WorldSkills. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today. From laying that first brick to spreading that last bit of mulch, he’s the man.”
Thomas’s future goals are double-barrelled. “I intend on running my own successful Landscaping business one day.” He then wants to return to school to inspire others. “There’s a good chance I’ll end up teaching at TAFE when I’m older, I hope to share all I’ve learnt with new landscapers.”
