Barbering Competition
Barbers use a range of well-developed sales, consultation and technical skills and knowledge to provide a broad range of barbering services to clients. They use discretion and judgement to provide client services and take responsibility for the outcomes of their own work.
The WorldSkills Hairdressing Competition is designed to allow Competitors to show a range of specialist skills and knowledge towards barbering services.

IT ALL BEGINS AT A REGIONAL COMPETITION
The WorldSkills Australia Barbering Competitions begin at a grass roots level in one of 42 Australian regions. The Barbering Regional Competitions test the skills and knowledge of 4000+ apprentices, trainees and students, who have the opportunity to win gold, silver and bronze medals and gain the chance to go on to compete at a national level.
WorldSkills Australia competitions operate on a two-year cycle. The next Barbering Regional Competition rounds are now running across the country. 2023 and 2025 are the next National Championship years.

The WorldSkills Australia Barbering Competitions aligns to the National SHB Hairdressing and Beauty Services National Training Package.
Regional Competitions
Training Package Requirements – Regional Level
The 2024 WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition for Barbering aligns to the National Training Package SHB Hairdressing and Beauty Services and some of the units of Competency contained in the SHB30516 Certificate III Barbering Qualification
Regional Tasks
The Regional Competition consists of 3 modules and is approximately 4hrs competition time excluding breaks and briefings.
The 3 modules include
- Men’s cut incorporating a fade and full facial shave
- Men’s creative long hair cut from an inspirational picture
- Men’s fade out cut including tracks and beard design from an inspirational picture
Required Skills:
- Ability to create tracks and carvings.
- Design and maintain beards and moustaches.
- Shave faces
- Implement freehand clipper techniques.
- Men’s cutting incorporating fades and over comb techniques.
National Competitions
Training Package Requirements – National Level
The WorldSkills Australia National Competition for Barbering aligns to the National Training Package SHB Hairdressing and Beauty Services and the some of the units of Competency contained in the SHB30516 Certificate III Barbering Qualification
National Tasks
The National Competition consists of 7 modules performed on live modules and mannequins and is approximately 12hrs competition time excluding breaks and briefings.
The 7 modules include
- Men’s haircut with fade and full-face shave
- Men’s creative long hair cut from an inspirational picture
- Men’s fade out cut including tracks and beard design from an inspirational picture
