Cyber Security is the application of technologies, processes and controls to protect systems, networks, programs, devices and data from cyber-attacks.

The Cyber Security WorldSkills Australia Competition showcases a diverse range of technology skills related to reducing risk and protecting against the unauthorised exploitation of systems, networks and technologies.

IT ALL BEGINS AT A REGIONAL COMPETITION

The WorldSkills Australia Cyber Security Competitions begin at a grass roots level in one of 42 Australian regions. The Cyber Security Regional Competitions test the skills and knowledge of 4000+ apprentices, trainees and students, who have the opportunity to win gold, silver and bronze medals and gain the chance to go on to compete at a national level.

WorldSkills Australia competitions operate on a two-year cycle. The next Cyber Security Regional Competition rounds are now running across the country. 2023 and 2025 are the next National Championship years.

Regional Competition

Training Package Requirements – Regional Level

The WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition in Cyber Security is aligned to the Units of Competency contained in the ICT50220 Diploma in Information Technology Qualification (Cyber security specialisation).

Regional Tasks

The Regional Competition is a team event – 2 competitors per team and is designed to run virtually throughout Australia. The competition allows participants to understand, learn and analyse the different kinds of attack and defence techniques by actively playing the role of Attacker and Defender.

The competition project is designed by Keysight Technologies to test the Competitors skills in the following areas related to Cyber Security:

  • Gather, analyse and interpret threat data
  • Protect critical infrastructure for organisations
  • Utilise design methodologies for security architecture
  • Develop, implement and evaluate an incident response plan
  • Review and update disaster recovery and contingency plans

Regionals Competition Duration

The competition is completed in 6 hours over 1 day not including briefing or breaks.

National Competition

Training Package Requirements – National Level

The WorldSkills Australia National Competition in Cyber Security is aligned to the Units of Competency contained in the ICT50220 Diploma in Information Technology Qualification (Cyber security specialisation).

National Tasks

The National Competition includes a range of tasks whereby Competitors are required to demonstrate well-architected cloud computing principals. The competition a team event – 2 competitors per team. This competition is run virtually across Australia.

The competition project is designed by Keysight Technologies to test the Competitors skills in the following areas related to Cyber Security:

  • Gather, analyse and interpret threat data
  • Protect critical infrastructure for organisations
  • Utilise design methodologies for security architecture
  • Develop, implement and evaluate an incident response plan
  • Review and update disaster recovery and contingency plans
  • The competition allows participants to understand, learn and analyse the different kinds of Attack and Defence techniques by actively playing the role of RED( Attacker) BLUE (Defender) – preparing the participants for the real world where there are lots of variables and unknownwhen they need to protect their network and assests against any network and cyber security threats.

National Competition Duration

The competition is completed in 18 hours over 3 days not including briefing or breaks.
