IT Network Systems Administration Competition

Network and Computer Systems Administrators, administer and manage Information and Communication Technology (ICT) support using a wide range of general ICT technologies. They are responsible for the day-to-day operation of these networks. They organise, install, and support an organisation’s computer systems, including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), network segments, intranets, and other data communication systems.

The WorldSkills Australia IT Network Systems Administration Competition will see Competitors demonstrate their skills towards administering and installing network switches and routes, troubleshooting security issues, responding to hardware and software faults. In addition Competitors will demonstrate their skills  in database enabling, operating systems, configurations, network systems, networking monitoring and e-business.

IT ALL BEGINS AT A REGIONAL COMPETITION

The WorldSkills Australia IT Network Systems Administration Competitions begin at a grass roots level in one of 42 Australian regions. The IT Network Systems Administration Regional Competitions test the skills and knowledge of 4000+ apprentices, trainees and students, who have the opportunity to win gold, silver and bronze medals and gain the chance to go on to compete at a national level.

WorldSkills Australia competitions operate on a two-year cycle. The next IT Network Systems Administration Regional Competition rounds are now running across the country. 2023 and 2025 are the next National Championship years.

Regional Competition

Training Package Requirements – Regional Level

The 2024 WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition for IT Network Systems Administration Technology aligns to the Units of Competency contained in the ICT40120 Certificate IV in Information Technology, ICT41119 Certificate IV in Telecommunications Network Design and ICT41219 Certificate IV in Telecommunications Engineering Technology Qualifications.

Regional Tasks

The Regional Competition has been designed to test the skills of the IT Network Systems Administration Competitors in a variety of different areas.  The competition requires the Competitors to create a network representing a small-to-medium enterprise using virtual machines using a hypervisor or physical devices (if available). The competition project is designed to test the Competitors skills in the following areas related to IT Network Systems Administration Technology:

  • Network Operating Systems/Server
  • Network Administration
  • Documentation
  • WAN/LAN
  • Firewalls

Regionals Competition Duration

The competition is completed in 6 hours over 1 day not including briefing or breaks.

National Competition

Training Package Requirements – National Level

The 2023 WorldSkills Australia National Championships for IT Network Systems Administration Technology aligns to the Units of Competency contained in the ICT50220 – Diploma of Information Technology and the ICT60220 – Advanced Diploma of Information Technology Qualifications.

National Tasks

The National Competition project requires Competitors to create a network representing a small-to-medium enterprise using virtual machines contained within a hypervisor. Network could be virtualised or physical depending on the regional implementation. The competition project is designed to test the Competitors skills in the following areas related to IT Network Systems Administration Technology:

  • Design, build and test a network server
  • Install, operate and troubleshoot medium enterprise routers
  • Install, operate and troubleshoot medium enterprise switches
  • Design and implement a security perimeter for ICT networks
  • Configure an enterprise virtual computing environment
  • Install and manage complex ICT networks
  • Identify and resolve network problems
  • Install an enterprise virtual computing environment
  • Plan, configure and test advanced server-based security
  • Install and upgrade operating systems

Nationals Competition Duration

The competition is completed in 18 hours over 3 days not including briefing or breaks.
