Manufacturing and Engineering is one of the largest industries in Australia, with workers in a wide range of sectors using metal to make, maintain or repair a variety of metal products and structures. Innovations in efficient practices and new technologies are transforming the industry, with new areas constantly being developed.

The VETiS AR Welding Competition run in conjunction with Weld Australia will test Competitors on their skills in welding using the Soldamatic AR Virtual Welder where competitors learn and understand welding procedures and techniques through a more interactive training method, gaining hands-on experience in a controlled, safe environment

IT ALL BEGINS AT A REGIONAL COMPETITION

The WorldSkills Australia VETiS AR Welding Competitions begin at a grass roots level in one of 42 Australian regions. The VETiS AR Welding Regional Competitions test the skills and knowledge of 4000+ apprentices, trainees and students, who have the opportunity to win gold, silver and bronze medals and gain the chance to go on to compete at a national level.

WorldSkills Australia competitions operate on a two-year cycle. The next VETiS AR Welding Regional Competition rounds are now running across the country. 2023 and 2025 are the next National Championship years.

Regional Competition

Training Package Requirements – Regional Level

The 2024 WorldSkills Australia VETiS Regional Competition for VETiS AR Welding aligns to the National Training Package MEM Manufacturing & Engineering, and some of the Units of Competency contained in the MEM30319 Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Qualification and 22461VIC – Course in Fusion Welding to ISO 9606 for transition workers.

Regional Tasks

The Regional Competition is conducted in association with Weld Australia on a Soldamatic AR Welding Simulator and is approximately 4hrs competition time excluding breaks and briefings.

The competition is divided into two modules:

  • Module A = GMAW Coupons
  • Module B = MMAW Coupons

Each assessment coupon includes a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) that must carefully be read and followed.

National Competition

Training Package Requirements – Regional Level

The WorldSkills Australia National Competition for VETiS AR Welding aligns to the National Training Package MEM Manufacturing & Engineering, and some of the Units of Competency contained in the SMEM30319 Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Qualification and 22461VIC – Course in Fusion Welding to ISO 9606 for transition workers.

National Tasks

The National Competition is conducted in conjunction with Weld Australia on a Soldamatic AR Welding Simulator and is approximately 12hrs competition time excluding breaks and briefings.

The competition is divided into three modules:

  • Module A – GMAW Coupons
  • Module B – MMAW Coupons
  • Module C – Vessel Project
  • Module D – Suprise Project
  • Module E – Work, health & safety
