VETIS PLUMBING SERVICES COMPETITION

Plumbers perform a variety of routine tasks associated with erecting and repairing structures and facilities, maintaining stormwater, drainage and sewerage systems, excavating earth and clearing and levelling sites, and installing and maintaining piping systems, fixtures and water regulators.

The VETiS Plumbing Competition is designed to test the basic Plumbing skills required to comply with effective workplace performance within the plumbing and services sector.

YOU SHOULD PURSUE A CAREER IN PLUMBING IF YOU:

  • Have an interest towards materials, and methods used to construct or repair structures
  • Enjoy working with machines and tools,
  • Are interested in doing physically active work
  • Are able to problem solve

IT ALL BEGINS AT A REGIONAL COMPETITION

The WorldSkills Australia VETIS Plumbing Competitions begin at a grass roots level in one of 42 Australian regions. The VETIS Plumbing Regional Competitions test the skills and knowledge of 4000+ apprentices, trainees and students, who have the opportunity to win gold, silver and bronze medals and gain the chance to go on to compete at a national level.

WorldSkills Australia competitions operate on a two-year cycle. The next VETIS Plumbing Regional Competition rounds are now running across the country. 2023 and 2025 are the next National Championship years.

The WorldSkills Australia VETiS Plumbing competitions align to the National Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package.

Regional Competition

Training Package Requirements – Regional Level

The 2024 WorldSkills Australia Regional Competition for VETiS Plumbing aligns to the Units of Competency contained in the CPC10120 – Certificate I in Construction, and CPC20220 – Certificate II in Construction Pathways Qualifications.

Regional Competition Tasks

The Regional Competition for VETiS project consists of a small bench job consisting of UPVC and copper products. The project has been designed for students to test basic trade Plumbing skills.

Regional Competition Tasks include:

  • Planning and set out of work
  • Machine bending and fabricating
  • Flaring & expanding cu tube
  • Jointing and fabricating UPVC
  • Carrying out required testing procedures
  • Working to accepted safety standard
  • Reading and interpreting Australian standards
  • Working to specifications with a high degree of accuracy
  • Working within a specified time limit

Regionals Competition Duration

The competition is completed in 1 day over 4.5 hours not including briefing or breaks.

National Competition

Training Package Requirements – National Level

The 2023 WorldSkills Australia National Competition for VETiS Plumbing aligns to the Units of Competency contained in the CPC10120 – Certificate I in Construction, CPC20220 – Certificate II in Construction Pathways, and 22569VIC – Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-apprenticeship) Qualifications.

 National Competition Tasks

The National Competition for VETiS will test the trade skills required to complete a simulated basic bathroom and laundry rough-in and fit out including continuous flow gas hot water system.

National Competition Tasks Include:

  • Planning and set out
  • Machine bending
  • Flaring & expanding copper tube
  • Jointing and fabricating DWV PVC
  • Joining and fabricating PEX, PEX/AL/PEX (composite) pipes
  • Jointing and fabricating press fit copper.
  • Fabricating galvanized iron
  • Installation of plumbing fixtures
  • Installation of relevant plumbing and gas fitting components
  • Working within specified accuracy tolerances
  • Carrying out required testing procedures
  • Working to accepted safety standard
  • Reading and interpreting plans
  • Reading and interpreting Australian Standards

 Nationals Competition Duration

The competition is completed in 3 days over 16 hrs. not including briefing or breaks.
