“Painting and Decorating offers such a wide variety of work. One day I might be working on restoring street furniture and the next applying a decorative finish.”
Apprentice Painter and Decorator Jemma Glatz has always enjoyed art for its blend of creative expression and attention to detail. After exploring different trades, she found a way to combine her love of art with the construction industry through a Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship. She joined Maxima, an employment services organisation, and is currently hosted by the Adelaide City Council.
“The work I do there isn’t what you first think of when you hear the term ‘Painter’. I don’t paint residential houses or commercial buildings. I keep the city and parklands looking nice for the community, like removing graffiti and restoring benches and picnic tables. I enjoy it as it’s really rewarding knowing you’re helping make public spaces better for everyone.”
One of Jemma’s TAFE SA lecturers encouraged her to enter the WorldSkills competition. She placed second at Regionals with a score of 94.5/100, then earned a Silver Medal at the 2025 National Championships.
“I can be quite anxious when it comes to new experiences, especially competitions. But WorldSkills helped me push through and overcome that. It also showed me how planning and practice are important for time management and skill development.”
Jemma’s proudest moments include: “When tools down was called for the final time and I could take a breath and look at my room and when I heard my name announced at the Medal Ceremony. I was absolutely shocked but so happy all my hard work and practice paid off.”
She is grateful for the support from her mentors. “Geoffrey was my first mentor at the council and taught me many things about my trade. Steve, my TAFE SA mentor, has put so much time into training me. I learn something new every training session. I really look up to him for his dedication and passion.”
