“Seeing how hairdressing can completely transform not just someone’s look, but also their confidence made me want to take the skill more seriously. I love creating that impact.”

Senior Hairstylist Larni Roberts is a woman of many skills. “I was a competitive swimmer for eight years and even made it to Nationals. I also briefly studied Business Law at University before realising Hairdressing was my true passion.”

Larni comes from a long line of Hairdressers, from her mum to her aunties, each possessing a passion and creativity that inspired her to follow in their footsteps.

“I really admire my mum — she’s been my main influence to start hairdressing. She successfully owned her own salon and now runs a salon from home. She’s worked incredibly hard throughout her career while being an amazing mum. I hope to be like her when I’m older.”

Her success at WorldSkills comes as no surprise, given her strong competitive drive. “During my apprenticeship, I’ve taken first place in two styling competitions, topped my TAFE class, won the class award in our final year, and earned Apprentice of the Year.” Her WorldSkills Regional Gold and Nationals Silver are just two more medals to add to her collection.

She describes her WorldSkills experience as “incredible,” pushing her to perfect her craft. “My biggest challenge was problem-solving on the competition floor. Sometimes things don’t go to plan, and you have to adapt quickly and find solutions, all within a strict time frame. It’s taught me resilience, quick thinking, and how to stay calm under pressure.”

Larni says WorldSkills has shown her that “Hairdressing is so much more than working in a salon.” It’s an industry full of opportunities. Her workplace has also played a key role in her success, teaching her professionalism, communication, and teamwork.

Looking to the future, Larni hopes to continue boosting people’s confidence and inspiring others to push their limits. “Whether I become a salon owner, a brand ambassador, a TAFE educator, or work abroad, I’m keen to embrace new opportunities as they come.”
