“A trade isn’t a second option to university. It’s an alternative that’s just as good. WorldSkills demonstrates that.”
Electrical Apprentice, Tasman Henry, credits his dad for his career choice. “He’s been an Electrician for many years. I look up to him as he embodies the ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality. He’s always telling me and my brothers that work comes first, then fun.”
Tasman began his apprenticeship at just 16 and in three years, he’s developed a deep interest for the trade, especially as he feels there’s so much to learn.
Tasman first competed at a Regional WorldSkills competition and wasn’t sure about his chances. “I expected to come dead last, but somehow, I landed first spot by just half a point,” He then went onto 2025 Nationals and secured the Bronze Medal.
When competing, Tasman found his biggest challenge to be self-doubt. “The experience pushed me to not just learn more about my trade and enhance my abilities, but also better myself. I’ve realised now I’m here because I know what I’m doing.”
Tasman is quick to point out that his achievements weren’t a solo effort. “I want to thank all the G-LEC boys but especially my boss, Greg. He’s been so supportive, letting me take time off to train and compete. He even made up an electrical board for me to practice on for Regionals.”
Steven Onn, Tasman’s TAFE QLD mentor, has also played a big part. “He’s the one that encouraged me to enter. He’s had a huge impact on my mindset and I definitely wouldn’t be in the 2026 Skillaroos Training Squad without him.”
At only 19, Tasman’s got plenty of time to think about his goals for the future. Right now, he’s laser focused on learning as much as he can about his trade. He also hopes his example will show others that being in a trade is a positive, opening doors to many opportunities.
