“Trades can be seen as a lesser career because you don’t need to go to university, but the truth is it’s an opportunistic career, especially in the current trade shortage.”

Plumber Archie Wilkinson says he wanted a ‘hands-on’ career, one he wasn’t sure he’d get from university. “After doing some trades work experience, I landed on Plumbing. It really interested me and suited my skillset and right after I finished school, I jumped straight into work.”

“I don’t think there was an exact moment where I realised I wanted to take the skill more seriously. It was more of a continuous drive from the start.”

It was Ethan Fisher, Archie’s TAFE NSW teacher, who suggested he enter the Regional WorldSkills competition. “I was hesitant at first as I didn’t know what it was, but I was happy to try my best. When I found out I came first and would go on to compete at Nationals, I was shocked and extremely happy.”

“The National Championships was my first time at such a huge event and I loved every second. Seeing all the different skills and the work produced was exciting, but what stood out the most was the amount of effort that goes into WorldSkills and the opportunities it provides.”

Archie grabbed his opportunity, securing the National Gold Medal. “It took a long time for my win to sink in and to process what this means for my future. It’s taught me I’m more capable than I thought and with practice and commitment, I can achieve so much personally and professionally.”

After his 2026 Skillaroos Training Squad selection, he couldn’t wait to share the news with his parents and his employer, Graham Isedale Plumbing. “Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve been surrounded by many talented plumbers who’ve taught me everything I know.” He especially credits his boss, Graham, and colleague, Gus.

Looking ahead, Archie says, “My end goal is to have the freedom of running my own company in a career that I love. I know it will take time, dedication and discipline.”

As well as keeping up his involvement with WorldSkills, he also has global ambitions. “As a Plumber, there are many opportunities that allow me to help others. I’d love to travel and do volunteer work in less fortunate countries, giving them access to clean water and sanitary systems.”
