“I’ve always had a creative mind and enjoyed bringing my ideas to life using my hands. That opened my eyes towards the mechanical trade.”

Fitter and Machinist, Bailey Lowes, is no stranger to collecting accolades. He was recently named Riverina Region Apprentice of the Year at the 2025 NSW Training Awards for his work at Goldenfields Water. This follows his WorldSkills Regionals Gold for Fitting, Silver for Turning, and Bronze for Fitting at the 2025 National Championships.

Despite this, Bailey says, “My journey goes beyond medals. It’s about proving that with passion, hard work and resilience, a trades career opens doors to the world.”

His love for Fitting and Machining began in high school when he enrolled in a VET Metals program. “I discovered the satisfaction of turning raw materials into high-quality, functional components. It led me to pursue an apprenticeship in the field.”

Unlike many of his peers, Bailey began his journey with no family background in Engineering or Manufacturing. “I built my skills from the ground up. It was a mix of curiosity, persistence and a readiness to learn from anyone willing to teach me that’s shaped my career.”

His first exposure to WorldSkills came at TAFE NSW. “I wanted to be like them. I wanted to challenge myself.”

“The experience has taught me that I’m capable of far more than I initially believed, both as a tradesperson and individual. Competing at such a high standard has sharpened my precision, problem-solving and efficiency, while also showing me the value of discipline and preparation.”

When he found out he’d made the 2026 Skillaroos Training Squad, he was equal parts shocked and excited. While Bailey felt immense pride and validation for all the work and hours he’d put in, it gave him a chance to reflect on the support he’s received, from his family, partner and work colleagues to his TAFE community, mentors and employer.  “My workplace has been a big influence in shaping my professional skills and my personal character. Working alongside experienced tradespeople has taught me practical techniques that can’t be found in a textbook.”
