“Helping others has always been part of who I am — nursing just gave me a way to turn that into a career.”

For Health & Social Care competitor John Ray, his journey into nursing began early. John discovered his passion for healthcare when he began volunteering at his mum’s workplace — a local respite centre for people living with dementia. “I was only in Year 8 at the time, but that experience showed me how much I enjoyed caring for others and connecting with people.”

That early exposure led John to complete a Certificate III in Health Service Assistance through TAFE NSW while finishing school. He’s now completing his Diploma of Nursing — and it’s safe to say his dedication to the profession has only grown stronger.

John’s journey hasn’t been without difficulty. During his final year of school, he was juggling his HSC, the start of his nursing diploma, and caring for his terminally ill mother — all while serving as School Captain. “It taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of empathy — qualities I carry into my work every day.”

His commitment and compassion didn’t go unnoticed. Just five months into his career, John was named Assistant in Nursing of the Year for the Lismore Local Health District and was also a finalist in the regional TAFE Excellence Awards earlier this year.

When John found out he’d made the 2026 Skillaroo Training Squad, his reaction was instant joy. “I was over the moon. I couldn’t stop smiling — I called my family straight away, and I was beaming the whole drive to class.”

Balancing study, training, and work has been a challenge, but John credits his teachers, mentors, and workplace for helping him stay grounded. “My mentor Anne and my teachers have been incredible. They’ve helped me create a training plan and set realistic goals so I can stay on track without feeling overwhelmed.”

“The chance to represent Australia on the world stage means everything,” he says. “It’s an opportunity to showcase our country’s incredible health standards and to highlight how TAFE gives people a pathway to a career they love.”
