Lachlan Basc

3D Digital Game Art

“I’ve been creating art since I was old enough to hold a pencil and looking ‘behind the scenes’ of game development as long as I’ve been able to use computers. It was natural to combine the two interests.”

Lachlan Basc is an artist at heart, with a passion for creating physical pieces, especially in miniature. His chosen skill, 3D Digital Game Art, is an online extension of that love.

Lachlan first delved into Game Development using ‘Scratch,’ a flash based coding website. He then moved to hacking old video games to add his own characters, all while closely following the career of his idol, Toby Fox, creator of popular indie games Undertale and Deltarune.

“Toby’s journey into game development is so inspirational, yet attainable that it spurred me to start down this path. After leaving high school, I decided to look into Game Art and Development more seriously and enrolled in the course at North Metropolitan TAFE.”

Lachlan blasted through his WorldSkills Regional competition, securing a Gold Medal, and achieved the same result at 2025 National Championships. “Competing in the National Championships was one of the most difficult challenges I’ve faced in my life. I had to overcome many struggles, most notably self-doubt, but I’m stronger and more resilient than I thought, and I’ve come through as a more confident person.”

For Lachlan, promoting skills excellence is important. “By showcasing 3D Digital Game Art as a viable career, I might inspire someone to go down the same pathway. That would be incredible.”

When he learned of his 2026 Skillaroos Training Squad selection, it was a moment of sheer excitement, with his family celebrating with a cake. He says they have been his biggest supporters, alongside his mentor Ryan Goggin, all his TAFE lecturers, and his friends “I’m so thankful to everyone who has sacrificed to help me get where I am today.”

Looking ahead, Lachlan hopes to work at a company producing independent games. “I want to make people feel what I felt playing them growing up.” He also aims to inspire the next generation of artists and developers and keep the independent scene strong.
