“It was during a High School Cyber Security competition that I realised just how powerful scripting and automation could be. It showed me the potential of solving problems creatively and efficiently, and it’s driven my passion for programming ever since.”

Zack Budai is not one to shy away from a challenge. He’s currently studying not one, but two degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.

“It was a strategic decision. I recognised the future of Cyber Security lies in understanding both the hardware and software systems aspects. This comprehensive understanding allows me to approach security challenges from multiple angles.”

His love of Programming began in Year 8. “I was fortunate to have teachers who encouraged my passion and guided me as I developed my skills.”

Apart from his tech stack, Zack is something of a musician. “Music has always been a big part of my life alongside technology. I can play guitar, bass, keyboard and saxophone.”

Zack’s WorldSkills journey includes a Gold Medal in Programming at Regionals and a Silver Medal at 2025 Nationals. “The atmosphere at Nationals was incredibly positive and encouraging. Being surrounded by so many talented competitors from so many disciplines was a highlight,” he shares.

“WorldSkills has taught me that I thrive under pressure and can adapt quickly to new challenges. I’ve gained confidence in my abilities and discovered how much I enjoy pushing my limits. I’ve also learned the value of precision, planning and collaboration.

For Zack, the help he’s received along the way has greatly contributed to his success. “My mentor, Peter Darcy has an admirable ability to bring out people’s strengths across multiple areas. My parents, whose support and guidance have been instrumental in giving me the opportunities and the foundation to pursue my passions.”

Right now, Zack is deciding between pursuing a PhD, or entering the industry full-time. No matter what he chooses, he has one overarching goal. “Using new technologies and ideas, I hope to innovate in ways that makes people’s lives easier or better. I’d love to contribute solutions that have a meaningful impact on my industry, my community, and potentially, on a Global scale.”
