“I was instantly hooked after playing around on an online Cyber Security training platform, I loved the challenge and the problem solving. It wasn’t just about learning theory, it felt like solving real world puzzles. That’s when I realised this was something I really wanted to seriously pursue.”

Security Analyst Dylan Wondal loves challenges. Hiking is one – he’s completed the 96km Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge three times and the Pinnacle Challenge, which involves hiking 30km, 48km, and 96km within 10 weeks. Hacking is another – at 14, he taught himself Cyber Security via TryHackMe.

“I came across it by chance and didn’t fully understand what it was at the time. But it instantly caught my interest.”

With a love of problem-solving, WorldSkills is a natural fit. “I’ve competed in the Regional and National Championships and took out Gold Medals in both. The whole experience has been amazing – the energy, the atmosphere and witnessing how skilled everyone is across all the trades.”

“WorldSkills has taught me a lot about dedication and resilience. I’ve learned I can push through pressure and stay focused even when things get tough. It’s solidified my understanding of the broad and constantly changing nature of Cyber Security thanks to the challenges we did across diverse domains. I feel motivated to keep learning across these areas.”

After his 2026 Skillaroos Training Squad selection, Dylan acknowledged those who helped him. “My employer, Solis Security Australia have been incredibly supportive. From my manager Joel to the General Manager Julie, they’ve all been behind me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made a massive difference in my growth and confidence.”

He adds that workplace skills contributed to his wins. “Time management is essential. I’ve also improved my soft skills and now understand how important teamwork is in Cyber Security – it’s a field where collaboration can make all the difference.”

Looking ahead, Dylan has altruistic goals. “My dream is to work in offensive security with the Australian Signals Directorate. I want to use my skills to help protect Australia from both foreign and local threats. I’d like to give back too by mentoring younger people who are just starting out in the field, helping them find their way like I did.”
