“WorldSkills has taught me to stop doubting my skill set and believe in myself.”

Emilie Flavel’s Graphic Design skills run in the blood with her aunt working in the field, but the moment she realised the career path was right for her was in high school. “I found it an easy subject; one I really enjoyed. This then led me to enrol in TAFE SA to keep pursuing the skill I love.”

Emilie describes her WorldSkills experience as “very surreal”, particularly the moment when she won Gold at Nationals. “During the competition, I was running purely on adrenaline. I usually need at least one coffee a day, but I didn’t even think about it. That’s how exciting and intense it was.”

One of her favourite parts of the competition was “seeing people in different trades enjoy what they do as much as me”, while relishing the creative challenges. “It helped me discover working under pressure is actually one of my strengths.”

Emilie has been surrounded by a strong and supportive network the entire time, from her family to her lecturers. She says they’ve “always pushed me to be the best I can be”, selflessly sharing their immense stores of knowledge to help her get to the point she is now.

While Emilie is still working on the challenge of “adapting client-centred practice to my own design style,” she’s confident in her future as a Graphic Designer. “I’d love to get to the stage where I can spread my trade knowledge and encourage others into it. I’d like to also return to TAFE SA and share my WorldSkills experience to inspire others to try too.”
